Tomahawk sind mal aggressiv und überdreht, mal atmosphärisch. Tomahawk glänzen durch Dissonanz, Tomahawk punkten durch schier unmögliche Tempowechsel. Des Tomahawk‚ Soundbild ist gerne körnig, dann wiederum eine kontemplative Ambient-Soundwand.
Und ja, Tomahawk – das ist die Kulmination von „Faith No More“, „Mr. Bungle“, „Fantômas“, „The Jesus Lizard“, „Unsemble“, „Helmet“, „Battles“ & Co. Goldkehlchen, Band(mit-)Gründer und Aushängeschild ist… ja, Mike Patton.
„Tonic Immobility“ ist deren fünfter Longplayer – und mit dieser gelungenen Scheibe feiern Tomahawk gleichzeitig ihr 20. Bandjahr.
Und was von „Tonic Immobility“ zu erwarten ist, das sagt Duane Denison punktgenau: “Tonic Immobility is almost a summary of everything we’ve done. There are references to previous things spread throughout the album as well as new territory. On any of our albums, you’ll find those faster, high energy, abrasive, and dissonant songs. You’ll also find the slower, atmospheric, groove- and tension-based moments too.”
„Tonic Immobility“ ist für meinen Geschmack resp. für Tomahawk-Verhältnisse recht eingängig. Das muss aber nichts heissen resp. heisst: Silberling Nr. 5 bereitet auch so viel Freude.
Aber was vor 20 Jahren Tatsache war, ist auch heute noch Tatsache. Tomahawk stehen für „lurid, thorny, profoundly weird music“ – bezaubernd konstant, verzaubernd kompromisslos.
